Review-BlackBerry Bold 9790″Bellagio”: The Speedy Onyx, Now with Touchscreen!

by septian anis noor anom
In Indonesia, BlackBerry is (still) king. So vast is the Blackberry smartphone population here, that the country has been known as the “BlackBerry Nation”. One of the features found to be indispensable by its users is the BlackBerry Messenger. Yes, almost all kinds of people in Indonesia –from professionals, housewives, to school children- rely on this popular instant-messaging application to communicate with their colleagues, friends, or kids. Thus, it’s not a surprise if many among us are delighted to see a new BlackBerry phone released to the market. This time, Research in Motion (RIM) combines the proven Bold style form factor with a sophisticated touch screen technology for extended usability.

BlackBerry is not the only brand in today’s smartphone market. Android phones are flooding into the fray, while the iPhone is getting better and better. RIM refuses to be left behind. Some new BlackBerry models have been released to refresh their lines of product, with the most recent being the Bold 9790 we’re reviewing this time. In terms of physical appearance, it is similar to its predecessors, the Bold 9700 and 9780, with the most notable differences being the shape of its phone dial and menu buttons, and the bulging backside. Unlike the two Bolds before it, however, you can also touch the multi-gesture screen to navigate.

Bold 9790 is one of the most technologically-sophisticated BlackBerries to date, thanks to its 1 GHz Marvell Tavor MG-1 processor and 8 GB of storage space that provides ample room for its user to store all kinds of data –including videos, pictures, and music- without needing to add an external card. As for the memory, Bold 9790 comes with 768 MB of RAM that should help ensure smooth experience with its OS 7.0 interface.

Comparison with Previous Bolds

Two friends at the office happen to be using the Blackberry Bold 9700 (“Onyx”) and Blackberry Bold 9780 (“Delta”, but more commonly referred to “Onyx 2”). As such, we have the chance to compare both smartphones with the newest Bold, from physical appearance and dimensions viewpoints. You can observe the differences between the three phones in the pictures below.

The new Bold 9790 (“Bellagio”) is sleeker and thinner compared to its two predecessors. It’s a bit taller than Onyx and Delta, but also lighter by a modest 14 grams in comparison to Onyx.
If you’re familiar with the BlackBerry OS 6, you will have no problem getting used to RIM’s latest operating system, the BlackBerry OS 7 used on Bold 9790. The most significant improvement we noticed is the addition of touch screen input support. Most of the user interface and operational aspects remain the same.

Highlights: The Touchscreen

The most interesting aspect of BlackBerry Bold 9790 is, of course, its touch-enabled screen. In OS 7, however, we could only test its multi-gesture functionality by using two pressure points (fingers) to zoom in and out when viewing a picture. To see how responsive it is, we played a session of the Brickbreaker game. As it turned out, the screen is remarkably responsive, although its smaller size makes it feel rather restrictive when used to play games.

Highlights: The 5-Megapixel Camera

Every BlackBerry comes standard with a camera, and the Bold 9790 is no exception. It is equipped with the same 5-Megapixel unit found in Bold 9780.

Battery Life

An MP4 video is played continuously (looping) on the BlackBerry Bold 9790 to see how long it would last before the battery gives up. The test was carried out twice, then the results were averaged. We recorded a battery life duration of 9 hours and 39 minutes with the Bold 9790. This result was obtained using the standard 1230 mAh battery pack.

Conclusions

By providing reliable communication with its exclusive data channel, RIM has managed to make its BlackBerry a brand favored by professionals on the go and gossip girls alike. Bold 9790 aims to enhance that experience by offering more powerful hardware and a handy new touchscreen. You won’t find that usual “clock” (busy) indicator here. No more waiting between actions. Whether you like to browse the internet, send emails, chat with friends, or access your social network via mobile device, Bold 9790 is ready to get the job done, fast.
Additionally, Bold 9790 comes with ample storage space and a speedy, 1 GHz processor that makes the “Bellagio” one of the fastest BlackBerries around, and it comes with that newest OS 7, too. In case you still find yourself needing more space, the MicroSD slot is always there.
So, is Bold 9790 the right BlackBerry for you? Choosing a mobile device is a matter of personal preference. Despite some minor changes, RIM maintains pretty much the same user interface layout –including button locations- as in previous BlackBerry smartphones. Users of older models such as the Curve 8520, 8900, or Bold 9700, therefore will immediately feel at home with the Bold 9790, while Bold 9000 owners might or might not like its smaller dimension. Some amount of time is still needed to familiarize with Bellagio’s new functions and features, though. But in the end, if you can afford it, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 can be a fun smartphone to work and play with.
