Here is Samsung’s latest -and perhaps the most interesting by far – Galaxy smartphone! The “Y” in Galaxy Y stands for “Young”, so you can already guess which segment of the market this phone is aimed at. There are loads of interesting features that you will find on this Android Gingerbread 2.3.5 phone, but the most prominent one has got to be its price. At Rp 1.200.000 (less than US$ 150), Samsung’s Galaxy Y appeals to just about everyone.
As for its size, Galaxy Y is relatively small for a feature-packed Android smartphone. Measuring 104x58x11 mm, this phone slips easily into your jeans pockets, your bag, purse, or even your shirt pocket. To make things easier, it weighs no more than 100 grams.
Galaxy Y is armed with Broadcom BCM21553 System-on-Chip (Soc), sporting an 832 MHz ARM 11 processor and a Broadcom VideoCore IV GPU. As for the memory, Samsung equips this phone with 256 MB of RAM, plus 160 MB of NAND Flash for storage. It has a reasonably clear 320×240 3-inch touchscreen and version 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) of the Android OS.
Sales Package and Contents
Now, let’s open the package box and see what’s inside! These are the additional accessories we found in the box:
Operating System: Android Gingerbread 2.3.5
Despite its wallet-friendly price tag, Galaxy Y comes standard with the Android “Gingerbread” (ver. 2.4.5) operating system. This is very nice indeed, since even more expensive models aren’t always equipped with that version of the OS. The Gingerbread should be able to maximize processing capabilities, resulting in more responsive operations.
By default, Samsung Galaxy Y provides three home screens, with the first one being your primary content-holder.
Display: 3-inch, Capacitive touchscreen
Given its relatively affordable price, the inclusion of a capacitive touchscreen on the Galaxy Y is well worth mentioning. The screen feels very responsive when we attempted to navigate through the menus. It supports two-touch multi-gesture input, and we didn’t notice any sensitivity problem during our test. You can easily play touch-sensitive games such as seperti Guitar Heroes, Fruit Ninja, and Angry Birds. No lagging was observed as we tap, swipe, and move our fingers around the screen in those titles. However, the 3-inch size did feel a bit restricting when we play some other games. We recommend replacing the “virtual keyboard” buttons layout with the “virtual keypad” for more flexible typing.Camera
As with most other modern smartphones, Galaxy Y comes with a camera. It is a 2-megapixel unit without auto-focus, which is quite standard these days. Although it may not be good enough for serious use, the camera is actually able to produce fairly good results under ideal condition (lighting).Multimedia Capabilities
This small phone has decent multimedia functionalities. Sound quality is good when heard through a set of earphones. The inclusion of an equalizer and six-channel audio support further complements its abilities. It’s worth noting that equalizer is not a common feature in this class of phone, even in the 2 million + (US$ 225 and above) league. Galaxy Y supports Android’s range of standard audio file format such as MP3, MP4, and OGG.We found no movie playback shortcut in the main menu, but you can play movies directly from the file manager or gallery. At 320×240, the screen won’t be able to properly display high-resolution contents, but it’s acceptable for typical usage. Galaxy Y also features an FM Radio tuner in case you want to listen to your favorite station. Simply plug the earphone and you’ll be ready to tune-in.Battery Life
We measure battery life by continuously playing (looping) an MP4 video to see how long the corresponding phone will hold on before the battery gives up. The test is carried out three times and results are averaged. With its 1200 mAh standard battery Galaxy Y held on for 10 hours and 30 minutes. Conclusions
Looking for a feature-packed smartphone or a GPS unit that does much more than just pinpointing your exact location? Maybe a handy MiFi device? The Galaxy Y easily fills those roles while being easy on your wallet. For its price, it offers a very complete set of features, and the performance is good too. The Google map software that comes preinstalled with this smartphone supports offline map viewing, so you don’t have to be connected to the internet to utilize Galaxy Y’s GPS functionality. In general, Galaxy Y performs better than its more expensive cousin, the Galaxy Gio. Although it does lag behind when it comes to graphics processing, you can still play most Android games without experiencing any noticeable slowdown. Unfortunately, the 3-inch screen feels a bit restricting, so you have to be careful when selecting titles. Make sure they’re comfortable when viewed on a small display.
The name suggests that Galaxy Y is most suitable to younger people, but it’s also perfect for anyone needing an affordable smartphone. Its small-ish size means typing difficulties for those with large fingers, but if that doesn’t bother you, Galaxy Y could prove to be a fun companion.
